Believe Midwifery Services
Neonatal resuscitation workshop specifically designed for the out-of-hospital birth attendant with experienced homebirth midwife, Penny Lane DNP, CNM.
Penny Lane DNP, CNM is an American Academy of Pediatrics NRP course instructor with more than a decade’s experience attending births, both in the home and the hospital. She has developed a course that respects the midwifery-model-of-care, yet also equips the midwife and her assistants to confidently manage a full resuscitation complete through intubation, medication administration and umbilical line placement within the home environment. Each neonate, whether born at home, or in the hospital, has a right to immediate and competent resuscitation.
Not a Lecture, but a Facilitated Discussion
The most current recommendations regarding neonatal resuscitation will be offered, as well as a plethora of information specific for the out-of-hospital provider, including delayed cord clamping, managing meconium present at birth, staffing models, securing appropriate equipment and billing for neonatal resuscitation.
The 6th edition of the NRP text places great emphasis on debriefing as part of the learner’s experience. Debriefing is not simply feedback from the instructor to the trainees. The goal is to discover what went well, what needs improved and how those improvements can be obtained. The best debriefs allow the learners to link their simulation experiences to their personal, real-world experiences. It is important to understand that most of the learning does not take place during the scenarios, but rather the debriefing that follows. Penny encourages midwifery practices to attend the course together, utilizing their own equipment, to better apply the knowledge gained to their own real-world experiences.
Prior to Attendance
Course attendants are asked to read in its entirety the Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation, 7th edition, and review the NRP DVD-ROM included with the book. The book can be ordered from the American Academy of Pediatrics website for $49.95.
Successful completion of the online examination is required prior to attending the classroom portion of the NRP course. Participants will be prompted to print a Certificate of Completion that they must bring to class and present to the instructor to be eligible for a Course Completion Card. Each lesson can be retaken ONCE if failed on first attempt. There is a fee for online testing and is in addition to the fees of this course.
Bring to Class
Print and bring to class your certificate of completion after having passed the on-line exam, your own neonatal stethoscope and the completed experience survey (provided with confirmation of registration). Extra points are provided for those who bring snacks, appetizers or desserts.
Learners must attend the classroom portion of the NRP course within 30 days of completing the online examination. To successfully complete the course, participants must pass the required lessons of the online examination, demonstrate mastery of resuscitation skills in the Integrated Skills Station, and participate in simulated resuscitation scenarios, as determined by the course instructor.
The workshop will offer hands-on experience throughout all the neonatal resuscitation skills for a course session fee of $300. All attendants will participate and test off in all lessons. The online test and purchase of the text are additional fees paid directly to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Upon successful completion of all lessons, participants are eligible to receive a Course Completion Card. This verification of participation is not issued on the day of the course. The instructor will distribute Course Completion Cards after the Course Roster is received and processed by the AAP Life Support staff. Course Completion Cards will not be distributed the day of the course.
